City archive

The archiving function is one of the statutory tasks of the municipality. The archives serve as a memory of the town and documents are kept partly for the town’s own administrative needs and partly for historical research.

The City Archives are the central repository for the oldest permanent and long-term documents held by the city authorities. The most recent documents and certain special documents, such as building permits, are kept in the archives of the service centres. The archives of the municipality of Loimaa, Alastaro and Mellilä, which have ceased to exist, are also kept in the Loimaa City Archives. The archives of the former Metsämaa municipality are kept at the National Archives’ Turku branch.

The oldest document series in our archives date back to 1869, with the oldest document dating back to 1794.

As a rule, the documents stored in the archives are public (subject to certain provisions of publicity, data protection and special legislation) and can be consulted by customers at the Town Hall during office hours Mon-Fri 9-15. Where necessary, certified copies of documents are also available. A fee, to be decided by the Town Council, will be charged for any copies and for any complex searches.

It is a good idea to book an appointment in advance, either by phone or email, to consult the material.
