Waste management

The City of Loimaa is a member of Loimi-Hämeen Jätehuolto Oy, which operates the Kirveskallio waste station. The waste management authority of the municipalities in the Loimi-Hämee Jätehuolto Oy area is the waste management board of the city of Forssa.

The tasks of the Waste Committee include:

  • adoption of the waste levy
  • moderation of the waste fee
  • extending the interval between emptying the waste container
  • processing of notifications for the self-processing of household sludge

Waste management is supervised by the environmental protection authority of the city of Loimaa (the permit division of the Environment Committee). Recycling points can be found throughout the city. They are operated by Rinki Oy, LHJ Oy and Suomen keräystuote Oy.

District heating

Loimaan Kaukolämpö Oy was established in 1979. The company produces and distributes heat in the Loimaan city centre and Hirvikoski area, as well as in the Alastaro city centre. Heat is produced in three plants: the Linjakatu, Myllykylä and Alastaro heating plants. In addition, there are four smaller oil-fired heating plants to balance out peak loads.

Chimney sweeping

According to the Rescue Act, the responsibility for fire-fighting lies with the owner of the property. The property owner is free to choose the chimney sweep. According to the Rescue Act, a chimney sweep is required to have a professional qualification as a chimney sweep or, from 2019, a professional qualification in building services engineering with a specialisation in chimney sweeping.

Frequency of chimney sweeping: fireplaces and chimneys in buildings used for permanent habitation must be swept at least once a year, and at least once every three years in leisure dwellings.

Fire inspection

Fire inspections carried out by the Southwest Finland Rescue Department are part of accident prevention. The purpose of a fire inspection is to prevent hazards to people, property or the environment. Fire inspections are always carried out at regular intervals, depending on the size and operation of the site. Fire inspections are carried out not only for buildings but also for various events.

Self-inspections are not required by the Rescue Act, but are recommended. Anyone can carry out a self-inspection at home or at work, for example, and help identify safety deficiencies. The self-audit form can be used as a support.

Rescue

The Rescue Department of Southwest Finland is responsible for rescue operations in the entire region, in the 27 westernmost municipalities and in the archipelago.

There are nine 24-hour and three 8-hour fire stations in the province. In addition, the region has an active network of almost 70 fire brigades.

The basic tasks of a rescue service include saving and protecting people, property, animals and the environment. In addition, the prevention of accidents and the promotion of a safety culture are key elements of the Rescue Service’s tasks.
