Private roads
Private roads can be divided into three categories: estate roads, contract roads and private roads. Roads belonging to a road association have an existing lien and the road association is established by a deed under the Private Roads Act, either by the Land Registry or by the municipal road board. Decisions on road maintenance, tolls, etc. are taken at the annual meeting of the estate. On contract roads there is no established road administration and the management of the road is agreed between the users. Own roads are for the property’s own use.
On the roads owned by the road cooperative, the shareholders are the property owners along the road and the road users who have been accepted as shareholders by the road cooperative. They are obliged to contribute to the maintenance of the road according to the benefit that the road brings to each of them.
Grants for private roads
The City of Loimaa contributes to the maintenance of private roads every year. The application must be submitted separately for each year. To receive the grant for the current year, residents of private roads must submit an application by the deadline.

Placing traffic signs on the road of a road association
For example, if a road association wants to reduce the speed limit by installing a traffic sign, etc., according to Section 51 of the Road Traffic Act, traffic signs require the consent of the municipality. Municipal consent is granted by the Municipal Environment Committee. The application for consent is made in writing and is accompanied by the decision of the local council meeting to install the traffic signs. An extract from the minutes is sufficient. If necessary, the application must also be accompanied by a map showing the location of the traffic signs, for example if only part of the road is to be reduced in speed.
